It was a beautiful late Summer’s day with Mother Nature giving us an extended summer season with temps in the mid twenties

Andrea & Daniel had their wedding at the Old Mill in Toronto

They exchanged vows in the venues chapel then had a wonderful celebration in the Guild Hall Room complete with a beautiful outdoor patio as the guests enjoyed the stellar weather & cocktails

We helped A&D plan their wedding from the early stages &we also provided them with all the florals & decor to make their special day beautiful

Here are a few pictures from their wedding day

It was a wonderful night full of love & happiness & we wish them a lifetime of it

Congratulations from FCL Weddings & Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your Special Day!

Ever wonder why your wedding flowers are so darn expensive?

Florists must be rich, as they charge such outrages prices, especially for a wedding!

Want to know why we charge what we do?

Lets start at the beginning, our training (assuming your florist is a certified floral designer), floral design school is not cheap (but so worth it) and that’s just the “basic techniques” course. Then there is all the extra training, books, videos, conferences & more courses…..

Now that we’re certified, we need a company name, logo, website, marketing materials, insurance, floral tools, flower cooler, vases, ribbon, floral foam, pins, glue, a workshop/office or a storefront, and so much more………

Now we need clients!

How do we find clients, or should I say, how do they find us? Bridal shows, print ads, certification courses, networking events, social media, SEO,blogging, vendor/venue referrals, continuing education, etc, etc…….

Ok, ok……we  now have our business up & running (Est. 2011), we receive an inquiry from a potential client

We set-up a complimentary consultation (many cases we will come to the client ~ a location close to their home/business or  the venue to meet with them). After our consultation with a potential client, we research pricing/flowers so we can provide the client with an accurate quote (sometimes this takes several emails back & fourth with many adjustments, etc.) Knowing this potential client has meetings set-up with other florists, we still continue to research & source out decor items for potential clients ~keep in mind we have not made 1 penny at this time

Wahooo! We just received an email from the potential client saying they would like to book us for their wedding!! We immediately draw up a contract for the client to read/confirm,sign & then send back to us along with a deposit (to be officially booked)

We DO NOT take a large deposits from our clients when they book, but our deposit ($250 initial payment) is non-refundable

We create a “client file” for all our booked clients. We encourage all our clients to send us pictures of bouquets, centerpieces, etc. that they like & we keep them on file & refer to them when we create their floral designs

We will contact our clients 4-6 weeks prior to their wedding to confirm ALL details before we order their flowers from our suppliers. And yes, flowers are expensive  (even wholesale) and they are perishable, therefore extra blooms need to be purchased incase of damage, spoilage or those naughty blooms that do not want to open in time for your big day, not to mention all the other items that most people do not even consider such as vases, floral tape, foam, deliver boxes & tissue, pins, wire, flower food, sealing sprays, cold glue, bouquet holders, corsage bracelets, tools, ribbon, broaches, etc, etc, etc.

THIS IS WHERE THE FUN BEGINS!

5-7 days before the wedding, we will pick up all flowers, vases, etc. from our suppliers (in Mississauga). All flowers are packaged to protect them during transportation & trust me when I tell you, it’s a lot of packaging!

All flowers need to be processed once we get them back to our workshop. This includes removing all packaging, lower foliage, thorns, etc. All flowers MUST be re-cut (so they can rehydrate) & “quick dipped” in a hydrating solution, before being placed in a bucket of fresh, clean water (with flower food) Some flowers need to be left out of the cooler for a few hours, while others can be placed in the cooler right away & tropical flowers such as orchids cannot be placed in the cooler as they need to be kept in a warmer climate.

This process can take anywhere from 2-6 hours (depending on the size, & # of weddings)

Floral designers do not have beautiful manicures. We usually have short & broken nails, not to mention cut fingers from those pesky thorns. Our hands can be stained from certain flowers & itchy, watery eyes from pollen is very common too

Then we need to get things prepped for designing. All vases for the centerpieces will need to be cleaned. Depending on the design, they may require floral foam (that needs to be cut to size, soaked & taped in place) or a grid (a cris-cross pattern on the vase to keep flowers in place) & then they need to be “greened” w/ foliage  x’s  the # of centerpieces (10 -25+) & placed back into cooler until ready for designing

Then all boutonnieres & corsages need to be made ( we once had a wedding that required over 80 boutonnieres for family)

Followed by centerpieces, ceremony florals & bouquets (the average wedding will take up to 40-60 hours of researching, ordering, processing, prep & design, delivery & set-up/tear down time) When you break it down into what we actually make an hour, sometimes we barely make minimum wage

On the day of the wedding, we will ribbon wrap all bouquets & package all flowers for delivery. We deliver all personal flowers to our clients as per their requested location & preferred time. We will then proceed to the ceremony/reception location & set-up all flowers as per our clients request

We make sure all flowers are fresh & we always have “back up” blooms just in case we discover a wilted hydrangea or bruised rose

We give all our clients that personal touch by making sure all of their flowers & decor are perfect before we leave the venue. Better yet, if we are providing you with Wedding Day Management as well, we will make sure your Special Day runs as smoothly as possible, allowing you, our client, to enjoy every (stress free) minute of your wedding day that you worked so hard planning!

Don’t take our word for it, see our “Reviews” on WeddingWire from some of our past clients

One of our favorite couples/families of all time!

We absolutely adored this bride & her mom. We worked with them for 12 months, planning their wedding

We met Meghan & her mom, Sandra at our office as they were looking for a wedding planner to help them with budget, design, vendors & all the little details for their August wedding

We had an “Initial Meeting” to discuss their wedding, what the needed from a wedding planner & to see if we were a good match for each other

One week later we got the call…….we were hired!!

Megan had many pictures of what she wanted for her wedding. Our job was to take those pictures & make them happen, within budget & without stress

We provided Full Planning, which includes Wedding Day Management & all Wedding Flowers

Here is Meghan & Kevin’s Special Day at Royal Ashburn Golf Club

Their beautiful wedding was featured on The Wedding Opera’s Blog!!

Floral arrangements for the ceremony

We lined the aisle with rose petals & white lanterns

It was a hot day & Meghan & Kevin wanted their guests to be refreshed during the ceremony so we made this lovely water station w/flavoured water complete with gorgeous hydrangeas, eryngium & hanging amaranthus

By the time we got the bride down the aisle, the water station was dry….I guess the guests enjoyed it!

gorgeous girls!

Brides bouquet on left ~ a mix of ivory white garden rose, spray rose, calla lily, freesia, eryngium, silver brunia & dusty miller & MOH’s bouquet on right ~ vandela & spray roses w/dusty miller

Mr & Mrs!

It was sad to say good-bye to this sweet couple & their families but we will always remember them

Wishing them both a lifetime of love & happiness!

What a beautiful bride!

Ashley wanted her bouquet to be a soft pallet of blush pinks, ivory & silver. It had to be very pretty with a touch of rustic

We created her bouquet with gorgeous roses, freesias, astilbe, silver brunia & dusty miller

We added a ‘lil sparkle to her bouquet by placing diamond pins in some of the roses & a pretty broach to the handle which becomes a lovely “keepsake” after the bouquet fades

We wrapped the bouquet handle with burlap for a rustic twist & softened it with a touch of lace

Ashley & Liam had  perfect weather for their late summer wedding & a perfect venue that tied in with their rustic/garden theme ~

Bloomfield Gardens

OMGosh! How adorable! We made these two ‘lil cuties floral crowns to wear down the aisle

Pretty in Pink

Ashley & Liam provided all the watering cans & we filled them hydragea & roses for their guest table centerpieces that 1 lucky guest per table was able to take home

We just loved this couple the first day we met them!

Jenna had a very clear vision of what her wedding should look like & she nailed it. J&C wanted a vintage wedding but instead of using the typical “mason jar” they chose mis-matched vintage vases for their  centerpieces & arrangements

She wanted all her centerpieces & bouquets to feature a single bloom of white flowers

Jenna’s biggest request was that her bouquet had to have peonies! Only problem, peonies are not in season in May….BUT, we found them for her & she was absolutely thrilled!!

Not wanting to spend countless hours & weekends shopping at  antique stores & flea markets, J&C decided to rent all their vintage vases & decor from an amazing vintage rental company located in Whitby~ Southern Charm Vintage Rental

And there is no better venue than Berkeley Church for a vintage wedding!

Here are a few pics we took of Jenna & Collin’s stunning wedding

Ceremony located on the upper level of the venue with its gorgeous stained glass windows

A very special touch. The B&G wanted to have a chair reserved for family members who have passed away

Head table arrangement that featured peonies, cabbage roses, astilbe, vandela roses, hydrangea, tulips, lisianthus & wax flower

in an antique silver footed bowl

Sweet table….yum!!

Each guest table had 3 mis-matched vases on a silver tray & each vase featured a single variety of white flower

here you have hydrangea, ranunculus & gypsophilia ~aka”baby’s breath”

This table had tulips, astilbe & stock

Each bridesmaid carried a bouquet of a single  white bloom, here is a lovely ranunculus bouquet

Here we have a hydrangea bouquet

Here comes the bride!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our past clients for an amazing 2014 Wedding Season!

We worked with so many fantastic brides, grooms, same-sex couples, families, vendors & venues

A big thank you to those who took the time to write us a review, sharing your experience working with FCL Weddings with others!

Reviews are very important for our business. To read our reviews, click here

Not only did we work with couples on their weddings, whether we provided wedding flowers and/or wedding planning/wedding day management, we also worked with great vendors, helping them with their events

We had the pleasure of providing floral decor & favours for a learning seminar put on by the talented, Jennifer Maxwell of The Wedding Coach

We also provided flowers for Mother’s Day for Mill Run Golf Club. guests treated mom to a delicious brunch & mom was able to keep the flower centerpiece!

Not to mention a couple of milestone events to happen to us personally

First, my son graduated from Grade 8 & we provided all the grade 8 grads with a boutonniere or corsage for photos

The graduation ceremony & after party was held at the lovely 4 Season’s Golf Club

My sister got married in June! Not only did I provide my sister with all her flowers (my wedding gift to her), I also helped her plan her wedding, which we planned in 12 weeks!

I had the honour of being my sister’s maid of honour, it was a very special day!

My MOH speech…….I made both my sister & her husband cry!

Best speech of the night!

We were very busy with weddings in 2014 & we are so looking forward to 2015!

Over the next several weeks we will share a few weddings with you. Unfortunately we don’t have pictures form all of our past weddings but will share the photos we do have

That being said, we always appreciate when photographers and/or couples send us photos of our flowers and weddings we planned/coordinated as we don’t always have the time to take any of our own

To see more photos (professional & “not so” professional) of  past weddings, please visit our Facebook page & while you are there, give us a “like”

And Remember……

We started 2013 in lovely Muskoka where we had the pleasure working with a great couple, providing wedding flowers & décor for their Winter Wedding!

We then flew to Montreal to work with a Corporate client, helping design a Winter Wonderland Gala for over 400 people. It was my very first time flying Porter & I loved it!

Next was the WPIC Kick Off Event! In 2013, I was the WPIC Regional Representative for Durham Region. Myself & fellow Reg. Reps from Muskoka, Halton/Peel, Kitchener/Waterloo, Niagara & Ottawa all collaborated together & planned an amazing event for our fellow WPIC alumni

To see the event, click here A great blog post by WPIC!

Durham Region has a new WPIC Regional Representative, as we change it up every 6-12 months. It just so happens to be a wonderful friend & colleague of mine who is the Wedding coordinator at Mill Run Golf Club, Amy Stevenson

During Wedding Season, we were very busy! Creating beautiful wedding bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres, centerpieces & ceremony flowers for several couples. We also provided Wedding Day Management for a few of them as well

I can’t express enough the “priceless” feeling I get when I hand a bride her bouquet & she gushes!

I truly love flowers & floral design and being able to combine my passion & a business is a blessing that I never thought possible….until now

Working with couples on their Special Day & taking over the stress & management of the day so they can relax & enjoy every single, precious moment is so rewarding. Watching them smile, eat, drink, dance without a worry, is why I do what I do

I provide my clients with that peace of mind & trust that comes through in my passion

Thank you to all of our past clients who took the time to share their kind words & experience working with us! Because of that, we were just notified that FCL Weddings & Floral Designs has been awarded the WeddingWire Couples’ Choice Awards for 2014!!!

To read our reviews from our past clients, simply scan the QR code with your smart phone or you can view them on our “Meet the Owner” page on our website

In July, we decided to open an office in the downtown Oshawa area. We share that space with 2 other great wedding vendors,

In-Style Weddings & Décor and Your Captured Moments Photography

It’s a great opportunity & convenience for couples planning their weddings, as it is a one-stop-shop! You can book a wedding planner, florist, photographer, photo booth, wedding décor, & candy buffet all under 1 roof

Clients are not obligated to book with all the vendors & we never push them to do so, but we have discovered that several clients love the idea of booking our services & having meetings on the same day, in the same location!

We are located at 70 Albert St. Oshawa~ By Appointment Only

We had an amazing year & we are looking forward to the 2014 Wedding Season! We learned a lot from all the weddings & clients we worked with in 2013. We will continue to give all our clients the BEST service we can as we continue to better ourselves & learn from past mistakes

We will continue to network with other wedding professionals, attend conferences and seminars to provide our clients with the confidence they made the right choice hiring FCL Weddings!

See you in 2014

Happy Planning!

  1. More often than not, venues now have their own wedding coordinator to assist couples on their wedding day. If that’s the case, why hire a Wedding Planner?

Let me set the record straight about this burning question!

It takes approx. 250 hrs to plan a wedding. Brides & grooms usually start to feel like they are in over their heads soon after starting to plan their own wedding. All of their weekends & evenings start becoming devoted to their wedding & can feel like a second job to them. Hiring a “certified” wedding coordinator can save them time, stress & money.

The 4 main reasons couples hire a “certified” wedding coordinator:

They are too busy/overwhelmed to properley plan their wedding

They are planning their wedding from a distance

They want a professional to handle all the leg work involved in planning a wedding

They prefer to take pleasure in their wedding day, not work through it.

CERTIFIED WEDDING COORDINATOR VS ON-SITE WEDDING CONSULTANT:

The on-site wedding consultant’s primary focus & responsibility is the Venue. The relationship between them & the couple remains a professional one. The on-site coordinator will assist in the creation of a timeline for the wedding in regards to the venue’s role & responsibilities. If the ceremony is also taking place on-site the venue coordinator will usually run the rehearsal for the wedding & direct the ceremony on the wedding day. The on-site coordinator is usually on-site on the wedding day & generally leaves before dinner turning the event over to the banquet manager or “Captian”

A “certified” wedding planner’s primary focus & responsibility is the Bride & Groom. They work closely with the couple, building a personal & professional relationship right from the beginning of their engagement. From selecting vendors & venues, budget management, theme development & decor, managing & seeing to the finest details & supervising the event itself. They keep everyone organized by setting up a clear plan for the event & following up to make sure all flows well.

They will be present at the wedding to direct the ceremony & reception & make sure all goes according to plan. On the wedding day, the “certified” wedding coordinator will be with the couple from before the ceremony until the end of the reception.
